Programs & Services

HOTLINE AND WEBMAIL OUTREACH/SUPPORT:   People from around the world contact us for advice.  Whether low risk, or serious disease, we guide melanoma patients and their families and offer ongoing support.  We help them understand their pathology, what clinical trials are available and even how to get the best palliative care.  Both the Skin Cancer Foundation and the American Cancer Society refer people to our hotline and we welcome referrals from all sources. We also provide lodging and flights to clinical trials.

SAFE FROM THE SUN WALKATHON:  Now being held in Villanova, PA, with events across the nation, allowing us to touch lives from Virginia to California. These events are held year round.  Along with a walkathon and 5k Race, we hold an extensive health expo and free skin cancer screenings for all participants, sponsors and their families.

EARLY DETECTION: Drastically increases the cure rate for melanoma! Teaching skin self-examination and sun safety to the public in all venues is our goal to have an even greater impact on mortality rates.  We can teach you in two minutes!

NEW PARENTS PROJECT:  Teaching new parents to protect their children and role model sun safe behavior.  As an adjunct to current prenatal education in health care settings, we not only teach about protecting children, but work on getting parents to model sun safety behavior.

SPROUTS:  Our new education program for grades k-5 that teaches about the skin as a body organ and smart ways to protect it.

PROM PLEDGE: MARIA WHITEHEAD MELANOMA AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: This program, created to honor the life of Maria Whitehead, will allow MIF to educates students about sun safe behaviors, the dangers of tanning salons and the importance of self-examination. One signature program of this campaign is the "Save Your Skin Prom Pledge." Female students are asked to sign a contract committing to stay away from tanning salons in preparation for the prom. Once their parents have also signed the contract, it is exchanged for a donated certificate from a local salon for a prom related service (i.e. up-dp, manicure, etc). Another component of the campaign is Sun Safe Play. Sun Safe Play allows MIF to reach hundreds of athletes with the message of early detection and sun safe behaviors.

SAFE FROM THE SUN SEED TEAMS: The SEED (Support through Education, Events & Development SM) Team Program allows volunteers nationwide to bring melanoma awareness to their hometowns. Working in close partnership with MIF, these volunteers host fundraising events, show early detection instructional videos and distribute informational materials throughout their communities.

COLLABORATION/HONORS: We are a participating member in: C-Change, American Association For Cancer Research, National Council For Skin Cancer Prevention, The American Academy of Dermatology’s National Sun Safety Council, and our president is an appointed member of the Governor’s Cancer Advisory Board and chosen to serve as melanoma representative for the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Advocates in Research and Related Activities and frequently called to serve as a patient advocate for melanoma studies. Our website received the Oncolink Editor’s Choice Award as well as a Dorland’s Rated best healthcare website award and most recently the HonCode designation complying with strict standards for information you can trust on the web.
